More Information

The Curzon Cinema in Clevedon originally opened in 1912. Extended over time, the building housed a cafe and shops and offered dressing rooms for stage shows, stalls, a balcony and private boxes as well as a retractable roof.
Changes throughout its history included moving from a gas illuminated projector to electric, silent movies to “talkies”, the use of piano and organ to sound systems and the introduction of colour films. In 1995 the cinema went into receivership and it’s future put into jeopardy until in 1996 a not-for-profit, community business venture, secured it’s place in history. Clevedon’s Curzon cinema is now the oldest, purpose built and continually run cinema in the world.
